As an innovation hub for the bioprocessing field, Massachusetts is a competitive arena for employee hiring. Qualified bioprocessing technicians are in short supply. So how does a company like Pfizer hire, train, and retain competent process laboratory staff?
They turn to WPI. Developed in partnership with companies from the biomanufacturing industry, WPI’s Fundamentals of Biomanufacturing, an eight-week evening program, provides the knowledge and experience needed by bioprocess technicians. David Sullivan, senior manager at Pfizer’s Andover, MA R&D facility, appreciates how WPI has helped make the task of hiring and training employees with no previous lab experience a lot easier.
“WPI understands the industry’s problem and has done something about it. Their biomanufacturing program gives students needed insights into science, as well as practical skills for working in the laboratory plus familiarity with equipment in a manufacturing facility. Because it is taught by industry employees there is a focus on being “hands-on.” This gets workers comfortable in a laboratory or manufacturing -based environment more quickly.
“An applicant who has graduated from a WPI biomanufacturing program - that is a resume I will review as a potential candidate. It shows motivation and a desire to succeed professionally in the life sciences industry. Plus, we’ve had tremendous results with graduates coming up to speed very quickly at Pfizer. It’s a retraining program that works and delivers a strong return on our investment for both the participants and the hiring organization.”

“Textron Defense Systems designs and develops state-of-the-art smart weapons; airborne and ground-based sensors and surveillance systems; and protection systems that deliver confidence to warfighters.
We meet this mission because of our talented employees. Our engineering organization needs knowledgeable, skilled team members with the drive to produce better and more efficient results.
WPI seamlessly delivered on this need in a way that was responsive and complementary to the educational plan we already had in place. Our engineering team appreciated the delivery format – learning around its own schedule and projects.
The flexibility of applying the credits from the company’s program to a potential degree program in the future made partnering with WPI the obvious choice.”
Charlie Neckyfarow, Vice President, Engineering, Textron Defense Systems
Like all of the nation's electric and gas utilities, Northeast Utilities (NU) must keep their leadership pipeline filled, even as customer expectations rise and the organization gears up to improve the power delivery grid's reliability. At the same time, about one third of NU's current workforce nears retirement age, and there are few undergraduate programs educating engineers in power systems.
WPI provides a customized Master's Degree program in Power Systems.
Our leadership team at NU wanted classroom instruction - for us, the face-to-face interaction is a real value. But no one classroom would be convenient to everyone who needs to take the courses.
"WPI Corporate and Professional Education worked with us and our industry partners to deliver a high-level Master's Degree program in Power Systems, in person, at multiple sites. We get top-quality WPI faculty, and a very challenging curriculum.
Over 60 Northeast Utilities engineers are participating in the WPI master's program. This is a large investment for NU. WPI plays an important role in assuring that our technical and leadership pipelines are filled with highly trained employees, who are ready to usher our company and this industry into the future."
Michael Ahern, Vice President of Utility Services
RJA — Rolf Jensen & Associates, Inc., a globally respected fire protection code consulting firm - needed to educate its workforce in an extremely specialized area: fire protection engineering. Yet the company is not located near the educational resources it desired.
Corporate and Professional Education offers WPI's distinguished Fire Protection Engineering program, customized to RJA, via distance learning.
"We're good at teaching the application of Fire Protection Engineering; we needed someone to teach the science. And we already knew about the high quality of WPI's programs - some of RJA's most successful hires over the years have come from WPI internships and graduates.
RJA has been impressed from the start with the can-do attitude of the WPI Corporate and Professional Education team. They always go the extra mile to customize the curriculum, accommodate our schedules, and make enrollment easy.
RJA has stayed with WPI because the online Corporate and Professional Education program provides the same quality content and delivery as the university's on-campus classes. We hope to double in size over the next five years - this will take well-trained engineers from around the world serving our global clients. WPI will be our partner in reaching this goal."

Millipore Corporation, a leading bioscience research and biopharmaceutical manufacturing company, needed to initiate consistent project management training for over 6,000 employees at 30 sites globally. Training had been taking place in pockets of the company, and Millipore recognized the tremendous value in cultivating uniform project management competencies organization-wide.
WPI Corporate and Professional Education brings customized project management training sessions to multiple Millipore work sites.
"WPI faculty engage people with short, frequent exercises that give participants plenty of opportunities to practice their skills in small groups. They work on their actual Millipore projects, not on fictional scenarios, so, our participants leave the course having already started to implement what they've learned."
