MS in Manufacturing Engineering
The WPI graduate program in Manufacturing Engineering allows students to study current manufacturing techniques while giving each student the flexibility to customize their educational program. Course material and research activities draw from the traditional fields of computer science, controls engineering, electrical and computer engineering, environmental engineering, industrial engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, and management. The program's intention is to build a solid and broad foundation in manufacturing theories and practices, and allow for further concentrated study in a selected specialty.

What is MFE?
Manufacturing Engineering (MFE) is a multidisciplinary program with courses available in manufacturing, industrial, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering, as well as management and computer science. You may focus in a specific area of interest (robotics, CAD/CAM, artificial intelligence, materials processing, etc.) or stay broad with interdisciplinary interests. We are also currently developing an emphasis in "clean manufacturing" to address the environmental issues in the manufacturing industry.

First Course Description
MFE 530 Computer-Integrated Manufacturing
An overview of Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). As the CIM concept attempts to integrate all of the business and engineering functions of a firm, this course builds on the knowledge of computer-aided design, computer aided manufacturing, concurrent engineering, management of information systems and operations management to demonstrate the strategic importance of integration. Emphasis is placed on CAD/CAM integration. Topics include, part design specification and manufacturing quality, feature-based computer-aided design, setup planning and production line analysis, tooling and fixture design, and manufacturing information systems. This course includes a group term project.
UTC Customized Schedule
WPI offers the Manufacturing Engineering master's degree program on site at Pratt & Whitney Customer Training Center. The curriculum is customized, and courses are delivered by the same faculty who teach at WPI’s Worcester campus. Participants are part of a cohort and will advance through each course as a set group, which will maximize the benefits to individuals, teams, and the organization.
Details are as follows:
- First Class: MFE 530 Computer-Integrated Manufacturing
- Location: Pratt & Whitney Customer Training Center, East Hartford, CT
- Start Date: Starting in September 2008
- Day/Time: Each class offered on week night, 5:00 – 9:00 p.m.
- Duration: 10 weeks
- Frequency: 4 classes per year

Qualifying Exam Policy for Management Courses
Courses that are classified as management courses by WPI require the additional step of passing a qualifying exam following the completion of the course. The qualifying exam is above and beyond the normal course requirements. It is not the final exam and is evaluated on a pass/fail grading system. This requirement is mandated by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. AACSB is the accrediting body for WPI’s Department of Management. AACSB accreditation is the highest level of business school accreditation in the world. Please visit the WPI ~ UTC website for complete details.
