MS in Mechanical Engineering
On-site at Pratt & Whitney, 5 courses per year
WPI’s Mechanical Engineering graduate courses cover fundamental engineering sciences, and special topic courses which expose students to state-of-the-art research topics. Current graduate course work and research activities include theoretical, numerical, and experimental work in rarefied gas and plasma dynamics, electric propulsion, multiphase flows, turbulent flows, fluid-structure interactions, structural analysis, nonlinear dynamics and control, random vibrations, biomechanics, microgravity combustion, materials processing, mechanics of granular materials, laser holography, MEMS, and engineering design. This gives WPI the breadth and depth to provide corporations with educational solutions that meet their specific technical development needs.
Mechanical Engineering Course Schedule

WPI CORPORATE AND PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
First Course Description
ME 515 Computational Methods for PDEs in Engineering Science
This course is devoted to the numerical solution of partial differential equations encountered in engineering sciences. Finite difference and finite element methods are introduced and developed in a logical progression of complexity. These numerical strategies are used to solve actual problems in heat flow, diffusion, wave propagation, vibrations, fluid mechanics, hydrology, and solid mechanics.
UTC Customized Schedule
WPI offers the Mechanical Engineering master's degree program on site at the Pratt & Whitney Customer Training Center. The curriculum is customized, and courses are delivered by the same faculty who teach at WPI’s Worcester campus. Participants will be part of a cohort and will advance through each course as a set group which will maximize the benefits to individuals, teams, and the organization.
Details are as follows:
- First Class: ME 515. Computational Methods for PDEs in Engineering Science
- Location: Pratt & Whitney Customer Training Center, East Hartford, CT
- Date: Starting in September 2008
- Day/Time: Each course is offered one weeknight, 5:00 – 9:00 p.m.
- Duration: 10 weeks
- Frequency: 5 courses per year

Qualifying Exam Policy for Management Courses
Courses that are classified as management courses by WPI require the additional step of passing a qualifying exam following the completion of the course. The qualifying exam is above and beyond the normal course requirements. It is not the final exam and is evaluated on a pass/fail grading system. This requirement is mandated by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. AACSB is the accrediting body for WPI’s Department of Management. AACSB accreditation is the highest level of business school accreditation in the world. Please visit the WPI ~ UTC website for complete details.
