The Fire Protection Engineering Program has been operating at WPI since 1979. Our goal is to prepare men and women for careers in fire protection engineering practice, advanced levels of specialization, research, and teaching. The first-of-its-kind fire protection engineering doctoral degree has been offered since 1993. WPI's Department of Fire Protection Engineering serves as a crossroads for bringing together talents from many disciplines, such as mechanical, chemical, civil, and electrical engineering, as well as computer science, physics, management, and mathematics, to address fire and life safety issues.

First Course Description: FPE 570. Building Fire Safety
This course focuses on the presentation of qualitative and quantitative means for fire safety analysis in buildings. Fire test methods, fire and building codes, and standards of practice are reviewed in the context of a systematic review of firesafety in proposed and existing structures.
UTC Customized Schedule
WPI offers the Fire Protection Engineering master's degree program online for UTC employees. The curriculum is customized, and courses are delivered by the same faculty who teach at WPI’s Worcester campus. Participants are part of a cohort and will advance through each course as a set group, which will maximize the benefits to individuals, teams, and the organization.

Qualifying Exam Policy for Management Courses
Courses that are classified as management courses by WPI require the additional step of passing a qualifying exam following the completion of the course. The qualifying exam is above and beyond the normal course requirements. It is not the final exam and is evaluated on a pass/fail grading system. This requirement is mandated by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. AACSB is the accrediting body for WPI’s Department of Management.
