Through a variety of formats including lecture, role playing, self assessments, group discussions and experiential exercises, you will develop a new set of skills to help you effectively carry out your management responsibilities and improve your own and your organization’s productivity. Each workshop features specific tools and techniques that can be put to use immediately upon return to the workplace.

WPI’s Introduction to Management & Communications Certificate Program features the latest essential skills necessary for new supervisors and managers to be successful.  An important concept that will be stressed throughout this certificate program is the development of the management style that is best for you. 

Participants earn 6.3 CEUs for completion of the program. 

This program can be delivered at your corporate site in the New England area, at our Worcester campus, or through a blended delivery which includes some distance learning options.

Program Topics


Workshop # 1:  Introduction to Essential Management Skills, Instructor Jay Boucher
Develop the skills and knowledge to successfully get work done through others, increase productivity and reduce turnover.  You will participate in a variety of self assessments, group discussions, case studies and exercises. The "take away" from this workshop is an action plan designed to improve your management skills.

Workshop # 2: Improving Your Communication & Meeting Management Skills, Instructor Dr. Sandy Nickel
In this workshop you will practice and critique yourself in a variety of situations.  You will practice one-on-one communication exercises; participate in and facilitate team meetings; and deliver a short presentation.  You will leave this workshop with new skills to help get your ideas across clearly and succinctly and be able to better communicate with your co-workers.

Workshop # 3: Introduction to Business Finance & Accounting, Instructor Andy Silverman, CPA, RIA
Learn how to read, analyze and interpret financial statements.  You will also learn basic cost accounting terminology in order to be able to work more effectively with accounting and financial staff. You'll also learn how to use budgets as a planning tool.  The focus of this workshop is to help you to make better business decisions using financial data.

Workshop # 4:  Developing Effective Coaching Skills, Instructor Dr. Sandy Nickel
In this workshop, you will evaluate your capabilities as a coach and practice strategies to further enhance your coaching skills.  You will leave this program with a solid understanding of how to assess individual employee performance needs and how to choose your most appropriate coaching and leadership style.

Workshop # 5:  Improving Your E-Mail and Written Communication Skills, Instructor Jay Boucher
Focus is placed on helping you make the best use of electronic mail; understand e-mail etiquette; identify tools, techniques and guidelines to increase the impact of your business writing; and reduce stress. Emphasis is placed on simple and direct writing to produce clear and persuasive thoughts.

Workshop # 6: How to Deal Effectively with Conflict, Instructor Dr. Sandy Nickel
Learn about the positive and negative aspects of conflict.  You will examine the consequences of ignoring conflicting points of view and the positive outcomes of clarifying and resolving differing perspectives. You will evaluate your own conflict style and learn the advantages and disadvantages of other styles.  You will practice and learn the steps to most effectively resolve conflict. 

Workshop # 7:  Understanding and Effectively Communicating Change, Instructor Dr. Sandy Nickel
This workshop targets the most effective ways to examine responses to change. You will develop ways to help others make necessary transitions and respond positively to the challenges of change.  Through a combination of hands-on learning activities, you will learn to identify communication strategies to introduce and sustain change efforts.
